Sir William Hotel
Set high on the side of the Hope Valley, most rooms at the Sir William Hotel, Grindleford have panoramic views over the village and across the valley. The Sir William has 7 individual bedrooms that offer many of the facilities of a full service hotel, but in relaxed and informal surroundings. The traditional inn is ideal for a short break, romantic weekend or even an activity holiday. The hotel has been recently refurbished and is home to the Terrace Garden Restaurant, which serves classic English food.
The Sir William was originally called The Commercial, which reflected the time it was built at the advent of the Hope Valley rail line to the village. It was later renamed.
There is some debate over exactly who was the Sir William Hill, after whom the 1,407ft/429m, mast-topped Sir William Hill, which dominates Grindleford to the west. Some people think it got its name from Sir William Peveril, builder of Castleton’s keep, but there are at least four Sir William Cavendishes from the well-known land-owning Chatsworth clan who could claim the distinction. Then there was also Sir William Saville, Marquis of Halifax, who was Lord of the Manor of nearby Eyam in the 17th century.
